From certain West African standpoints, this brew is a cure-all. It is the definitive infusion to drink when you’ve been up too late and on the town, when you’re recovering from a string of heavy, festive meals, and when you’re feeling like your digestion and elimination systems need some aid.
Kenkiliba leaves are sold by the shopping bag full at roadsides and intersections throughout the Wolof, Fula and Mandinka cities and towns of West Africa. You’ll also find some in the market, but depending on where you are, you might need to ask.
Herbal Kenkiliba Tea
2 liters of filtered water
2 handfuls of kenkiliba leaves, dried
1. Boil the water and the leaves together in a non-reactive (enamel or stainless steel, if you can) pot, covered and on a low simmer for about 10 minutes.
2. Remove from the heat and let the leaves infuse for another 5 minutes.
3. Strain and serve hot. Kenkiliba tea can also be cooled and poured into glass bottles.
- In the morning as a hot tea, with a slice of lemon, before you eat your breakfast.
